Construction work coming in at quickest rate seen this century

first_imgTHE CONSTRUCTION sector is continuing to pick up momentum, with workloads rising at their quickest rate for 20 years, new survey data shows today. The survey undertaken by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) uses net balances – the proportion of people giving a positive response minus the per cent of those giving a negative one. The net balance of firms reporting an increase in workload over the third quarter rose to 46 – its highest level since 1994 and up from 41 per cent in the second quarter of the year. This marks the eighth consecutive quarterly rise in workloads.Private commercial property and house builds lead the boom, scoring record high net balances of 58 and 59 respectively.“Unprecedented housing demand, the bounce back from a very deep recession and government’s commitment to invest £36bn in more than 200 infrastructure projects is driving much needed confidence across the industry,” said Alan Muse, Rics director of built environment. City salaries rise 18pc as demand for new recruits intensifies in London’s finance sector

first_imgNew salaries in London’s financial services sector went up significantly in 2014, as demand for skilled workers increased. On average, those offered new jobs in the City secured pay 18 per cent higher than in the previous year, according to data released today by Morgan McKinley.  The recruitment firm’s figures show that even in December, which is traditionally a quiet month for hiring, an estimated 4,620 new jobs were created. This was 13 per cent higher than during the equivalent period in 2013.  Such a jump in pay far exceeds average rises across all sectors in the UK – wages have lagged behind inflation for most of the period since the global financial crisis in 2008.  The trend among City workers is expected to continue this year, according to Hakan Enver, operations director for the company. This is because the need for new staff will continue to rise, particularly in the IT sector, irrespective of the UK’s economic prospects.  “While we continue to also see demand outstripping supply for skilled IT executives, regulatory demands and enhanced reporting needs are pushing compliance to the top of hiring agendas in the City,” he said.  Tags: employment and wages UK jobs Show Comments ▼ whatsapp Sarah Spickernell whatsapp City salaries rise 18pc as demand for new recruits intensifies in London’s finance sector Monday 12 January 2015 4:52 am Share More From Our Partners A ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.comKiller drone ‘hunted down a human target’ without being told tonypost.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgSupermodel Anne Vyalitsyna claims income drop, pushes for child supportnypost.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.orgFlorida woman allegedly crashes children’s birthday party, rapes teennypost.comBrave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orglast_img read more

Politicians slam HMRC and FCA for HSBC tax evasion failure

first_img Share Senior MPs criticised the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Revenue and Customs (HMRC) yesterday, after it was revealed the FCA was unaware of the wrongdoing at HSBC, and that HMRC had failed to pass on its concerns to the City watchdog. The chairman of the FCA, Martin Wheatley, made a pre-arranged appearance in front of the Treasury select committee.  Labour MP John Mann said: “HSBC has been investigated by authorities across the world, but you, as the conduct authority, in this country have not even been informed about what HMRC have been investigating for five years.  He asked Wheatley: “How can you possibly be working with the bank from 2013 when you don’t have full knowledge of what they’ve been doing, and another part of the government does know, but isn’t informing you?” The business secretary Vince Cable wrote to Douglas Flint,  chair of HSBC, about “historic practices within HSBC designed to enable customers, including UK clients, to avoid paying tax”.  He also raised the situation of Sue Shelley, who had been head of compliance for HSBC in Luxembourg, but alleges she lost her job after raising concerns internally. Cable said  in his letter that “these allegations would appear to raise questions about the extent to which the bank’s internal culture has been comprehensively reformed on this crucial point.  Meanwhile Labour ramped up pressure on the government, saying that they failed to act on HSBC in 2010.  Politicians slam HMRC and FCA for HSBC tax evasion failure whatsapp Show Comments ▼ by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity Weekzenherald.comMeghan Markle Changed This Major Detail On Archies Birth Certificatezenherald.comElite HeraldExperts Discover Girl Born From Two Different SpeciesElite HeraldInvestbaeRemember Ronda Rousey? Stalling London house market falls behind Northern Ireland’s

first_img Stalling London house market falls behind Northern Ireland’s THE SCOTTISH and Northern Irish housing markets are more buoyant than the stalled sector in London, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) said today.Overall the housing market is still rising – the number of surveyors reporting rising prices outweighed those reporting falling prices by a margin of seven per cent in January. But in London, a net balance of 49 per cent said prices are on the slide.By contrast a balance of 47 per cent in Northern Ireland and 38 per cent in Scotland said prices are rising. The surveyors predicted a steady rise in prices over the forseeable future.“The volume of home starts will still fall considerably short of the number of new households being formed, let alone making a dent in the historic shortfall of housing across all tenures,” said RICS’ chief economist Simon Rubinsohn. by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity Weekzenherald.comMeghan Markle Changed This Major Detail On Archies Birth Certificatezenherald.comElite HeraldExperts Discover Girl Born From Two Different SpeciesElite HeraldLivestlyThe Best Redhead Actresses, RankedLivestlyNoteableyKirstie Alley Is So Skinny Now And Looks Like A BarbieNoteableyBeverly Hills MDPlastic Surgeon Explains: “Doing This Every Morning Can Snap Back Sagging Skin” (No Creams Needed)Beverly Hills MDSenior Living | Search AdsNew Senior Apartments Coming to Scottsdale (Take A Look at The Prices)Senior Living | Search AdsBeach RaiderMom Belly Keeps Growing, Doctor Sees Scan And Calls CopsBeach Raider Share whatsapp Tags: NULLcenter_img More From Our Partners Supermodel Anne Vyalitsyna claims income drop, pushes for child supportnypost.comA ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.comBrave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgFlorida woman allegedly crashes children’s birthday party, rapes teennypost.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.orgKamala Harris keeps list of reporters who don’t ‘understand’ her: reportnypost.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orgWhy people are finding dryer sheets in their mailboxesnypost.comI blew off Adam Sandler 22 years ago — and it’s my biggest regretnypost.com‘The Love Boat’ captain Gavin MacLeod dies at 90nypost.com980-foot skyscraper sways in China, prompting panic and evacuationsnypost.comUK teen died on school trip after teachers allegedly refused her pleasnypost.comKiller drone ‘hunted down a human target’ without being told tonypost.comInside Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ not-so-average farmhouse estatenypost.com‘Neighbor from hell’ faces new charges after scaring off home buyersnypost.comMark Eaton, former NBA All-Star, dead at 64nypost.com Wednesday 11 February 2015 8:49 pm Express KCS Show Comments ▼ whatsapplast_img read more

Challenger bank Aldermore covers books on IPO

first_imgTuesday 3 March 2015 10:24 am Challenger bank Aldermore has covered the books on its initial public offering, early in the first day of its bookbuild, City A.M. understands. The lender had to postpone its flotation late last year on choppy market conditions, so will be relieved to have had such a warm hearing from investors this time around. The bank, headed by Phillip Monks, is selling shares worth 40 per cent of the business, and is raising £75m of new funds in the stock market debut. Its IPO is expected to value the bank at £600m to £660m, with shares priced at between £1.75 to £1.95. Having scrapped its original plans in October, Aldermore confirmed at the end of last month that it was planning to have another go at its IPO, after it posted figures showing underlying profit before tax more than doubled in 2014 to £56m, while return on equity increased 15 per cent and net loans rose 42 per cent to £4.8bn. Aldermore will become the second challenger bank to IPO in recent months: in November, Virgin Money pressed ahead with its plans to float, having scrapped them around the same time as Aldermore.  Challenger bank Aldermore covers books on IPO whatsapp whatsapp More From Our Partners Inside Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ not-so-average farmhouse estatenypost.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgKiller drone ‘hunted down a human target’ without being told tonypost.comBrave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgSupermodel Anne Vyalitsyna claims income drop, pushes for child supportnypost.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orgRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.orgA ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.comcenter_img Share Emma Haslett by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekGundry MD Bio Complete 3 SupplementTop Surgeon: This Simple Trick Empties Your Bowels Every Morning (Almost Immediately)Gundry MD Bio Complete 3 Supplementzenherald.comMeghan Markle Changed This Major Detail On Archies Birth Certificatezenherald.comMagellan TimesThis Is Why The Roy Rogers Museum Has Been Closed For GoodMagellan TimesDefinitionThe Most Famous Movie Filmed In Every U.S. StateDefinitionTheFashionBallPrince Harry Admits Meghan Markle May Not Be The OneTheFashionBallNoteableyKirstie Alley Is So Skinny Now And Looks Like A BarbieNoteableyEquity MirrorThey Drained Niagara Falls — They Weren’t Prepared For This Sickening DiscoveryEquity Mirror Show Comments ▼ Tags: Aldermore Challenger bankslast_img read more

Meet senator Rand Paul Nigel Farage’s new book – The Purple Revolution – gives the definitive inside account as to how a party once on the fringes of British politics came to be a major player on the national stage, told by the man who arguably made it all happen.Among the revelations of how Ukip managed to snag two Tory MPs and how several near death experiences have influenced his politics, the book shines a light on which politicians Farage admires today. In the past, Farage has spoken warmly of Conservative politicians Enoch Powell, Keith Joseph and Margaret Thatcher. But as a scourge of today’s mainstream parties who Farage claims are all social democrats, it’s hard to see who in contemporary British politics Farage could considered to be in agreement with.Perhaps that’s why Farage looks to Washington, rather than Westminster to find ideological allies. During a visit to Washington DC, Farage met Republican Kentucky senator Rand Paul.”Over the course of that half-hour, I realised that in Rand Paul I had found my political doppelgänger”, Farage wrote in the Telegraph.”I liked Paul enormously: he is a realist, he is down to earth and very modest”. Farage, clearly impressed with the Paul, added ” I left the meeting thinking that Rand was a man I could do business with in the future – there are plenty within the Tea Party with whom I could not.So who is this junior senator that Nigel Farage considers his political soulmate?Rand Paul, elected to the US senate in 2011, comes from a political family. His father, Ron Paul, is a former congressman from Texas, who stood for President three times. Twice on the Republican ticket and once for the Libertarian party.A staunch libertarian, Paul argued that the only purpose of government is to protect the rights to individual rights of life, liberty and property. Rand shares many of his father’s libertarian leanings, with a deeply suspicion of government intervention into the economy and passion for advancing open markets and lower taxes.Paul cites novelist Ayn Rand and economist Friedrich Hayek as a few of the central characters who have shaped his political views.  However, he is is not your typical right-wing Republican. A strong contender for the party’s Presidential primary, Paul is attempting to shift the GOP away from its dogmatic adherence to a neoconservative foreign policy and ever greater defence spending. While not in favour of full drug legalisation, Paul has advocated criminal justice reform to stop minor drug users being imprisoned and insists states like Colorado that have legalised recreational marijuana should be allowed to experiment.Like Farage, Paul has is no stranger to controversy. During an interview in 2010, Paul qualified his support for the Civil Rights Act saying he was concerned about forcing private businesses not to discriminate. He said public bodies should not be allowed to discriminate on racial grounds and that private businesses that did would lose out because of public outrage. The Republican establishment bitterly opposed Paul’s candidacy for the Senate, but a wave of Tea Party and grass-roots support carried the him into office. There is little doubt Rand Paul will stand for President in 2016, running on a pro-freedom agenda with a focus on expanding the GOP’s base and shifting the party’s stance on foreign policy.Polls so far out from the primaries mean little at the moment but the consensus among pundits remains that Paul will fail to win his party’s nomination. However, with a strong campaign infrastructure inherited from his father and enthusiastic base of young supporters the libertarian senator could prove to be the successful insurgent Nigel Farage so admires. Retail sales unexpectedly slip in March as petrol sales plummet

first_img Retail sales unexpectedly slip in March as petrol sales plummet Jessica Morris Thursday 23 April 2015 6:29 am Show Comments ▼ The easter bunny failed to help retail sales, which unexpectedly fell last month as motorists stayed away from petrol pumps, adding to the mixed picture currently being painted for the economy.Retail sales fell 0.5 per cent in March from a month earlier, as petrol stations said sales slipped 6.2 per cent, according to data released today by the Office for National Statistics. The figures took City economists by surprise – many had expected a rise of 0.4 per cent.”It had seemed likely that Easter being right at the start of April would lift sales in March,” Howard Archer, chief economist at IHS, said. However, economists are now looking to the release of first quarter GDP next Tuesday, with many forecasting growth to have slowed slightly from the previous quarter.”Concern that gross domestic product growth could have slowed appreciably in the first quarter of 2015 has been fuelled by disappointing industrial production … construction output data for February as well as weaker trade data,” Archer said.
